Beginnings

Everything has a beginning.

We can all point to the day when our life began. My life outside the womb began on March 16, 1976.  My life in the womb began about 34 weeks before that day.  That was the day (whenever that was) that my life began – that I began.  The day before that day (whenever that was) I didn’t exist.

Think about this fact for a moment.  There was a day when you came to be a living being.  Before that day, you didn’t exist.  In fact, there was an hour, a minute, and a second when you came to be a living thing.  Before that hour, minute, and second you didn’t exist.

And so it is with every living thing.  Every plant, bird, fish, animal, bacteria…  All of them had a beginning.  In fact, every non-living thing had a beginning as well.  Every rock, mineral, planet, star, galaxy had a beginning as well.  I just happen to believe that moment was when God spoke them into existence.  But they all had a beginning as well.

There is only One who has no beginning.  There is only One who cannot point to the day when He began.  There is only One who cannot point to the hour, the minute, and the second when he came into existence.

His name is God.

Genesis 1:1

1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

In the beginning there was God.  At the beginning of all things that were made, both living and non-living, there was the One who made it all.

We’ve just entered into a new year.  Some people like to think of it as a new beginning.  There’s nothing wrong with that.  Whether you see it as a new beginning or just another day, we can all use right now as our new beginning to make the choice to devote ourselves to doing God’s will and His work.

The best part is that we can invite God to walk along with us in this new beginning, and use Him as our rock when we need an anchor, as our shield when we need a defender, as our sword when we need a weapon, and as our shoulder when we need comfort.

James 4:8 says

8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

As we begin this new year, let’s have this goal from James in mind.

Fun fact:  At the moment you were born, if it was even for a micro-fraction of a second, you were the youngest person on Earth.
